Family of Jonathan Culbert (photo)(will) and 1st wife Mary Ann Black of Gortlenaghan, Tyrone, Ireland.

 

  1. Margaret Jane Culbert 1st daughter (photo with father, photo) was baptized at Lower Clonaneese Presbyterian Church January, 1829, born ____ 1828. She married William Cruthers, born Ireland, in 1856 at Bond Head, Tecumseth, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada and he died 10 years later. Her brother, John, helped her with her farm. Margaret Jane died March 20, 1924 in Bond Head, Tecumseth. Her obituary says that she came to Canada at age 18, leaving Ireland because of the failure of the potato crop failure and consequent famine. She is survived by a brother William in Ireland. The family possesses a letter by Lizzie Webster Cruthers dated September 24, 1898 and sent to Jim, Edie, and Ella Culbert addressed to Mrs. Culbert, Shammony West, Douglas Bridge, Strabane, Ireland.

  1. Robert 1st son was baptized in 1831. His obituary states he died May 2, 1910 in his 80th year and he came to Canada at age 14. On the 9 Feb. 1860 he married Margaret Downey in Tecumseth, Ontario. She was born in Ireland 1 Jan. 1833 to Robert Downey born Ireland and Frances Stewart born Scotland, and died Canada 15 Feb. 1924.

  1. Isabella 2nd daughter baptized Sept 1832. If this is their daughter, she did not come to Canada as far as we know.

Sometime after this Mary Ann Black died and Jonathan Culbert remarried.

  1. John b.c. 1839 in Ireland d. 17 Feb. 1917 Bond Head, Tecumseth, Ontario (photo). He had come to Canada, then returned to Tyrone, Ireland where on 17 April 1863, he married Isabella Johnston daughter of Robert Johnston of Killylevin (marriage cert). Isabella (Johnston) Culbert b. June 1, 1844. d. Mar. 8, 1927 death certificate says her mother was Elizabeth Black of Tyrone, Ireland. John & Isabella are buried in Bond Head United Church Cemetery, West Gwillimbury Township, Simcoe County, Ontario. (headstone photo)

  1. Mary Ann b. c. 1840 in Ireland, d. 10 Apr. 1910 at Craigvale, Innisfil, Ontario, Canada. (photo) Married Joseph Fagan ( b.1 Jan 1837 in Ireland to James Fagan and unknown Black d. 19 July, 1922 Innisfil, Ontario) on 19 Nov 1863 in Bond Head, Tecumseth, Ontario.

  1. Alexander Culbert b. c. 1844 Gorey, Tyrone. Named for his mother’s father, Alexander Drummond. He went to Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada at age 19 about the time his brother John and wife Isabella (Johnston) emigrated. He is buried in Thornton Cemetery, Essa, Ontario. Died. April 13, 1933 aged 90 years.

 

 

 

  1. Ellen Culbert b. c. 1846 Ireland, to Canada by 1871 census when (age 25) she is living with her brother John and his wife Isabella. Married at age 33 to Robert Watt born Ireland, age 43, widower, on 9 June 1879. She died March 29, 1882 Tecumseth, Ontario.


  2. William Culbert stayed in Ireland.
