Members of Lodge No. 944 meeting at Gortin (originally referred to as Gorteen) would have been drawn from the surrounding district (parishes of Ardstraw, Cappagh, Bodoney Lower & Bodoney Upper.) Meetings were generally held on the night of a full moon allowing for safe travel on horseback in an era of poor quality roads.
