Grange graveyard is the site of a former Augustinian monastery, located in the townland of Grange, Donagheady parish, in the north of Co. Tyrone. The earliest surviving headstone commemorates Robert Granger who died in 1630.
This pre-Reformation graveyard appears to have been predominantly the burial place for members of 1st & 2nd Donagheady Presbyterian Churches and Bready Reformed Presbyterian Church, although there is a presence of native Irish families who retained burial rights.
A surviving map of burial places is a copy of a survey dated 1830 indicating many of the named families were no longer resident in the parish; recorded locations at that time include Donagheady and Leckpatrick parishes and the town of Strabane in Co. Tyrone, Derry City and Co. Londonderry & Co. Donegal. This list of parishioners is particularly valuable as the tithe applotment book for Donagheady has not survived.
Grange was closed for burials in January 1938 with a schedule of exceptions published naming families with reserved rights and the number of burials permitted.
Addresses in 1938 indicate the spread of former parishioners: Derry City, various places in Co. Londonderry, Strabane, Co. Tyrone, Scotland & London.
Inscriptions on surviving headstones were transcribed and privately published by Sheelagh and David Todd in 1993. This publication is now out of print.
