RIOTOUS PROCEEDINGS IN STRABANE
The Magistrates assembled at Petty Sessions in Strabane, on Monday the 25th ult., were occupied for a considerable time in hearing a case in which a number of persons at the suit of the Constabulary, charged with having riotously assembled in the Town-Hall of Strabane, on the evening of the 18th ult., and of creating a riot and committing an assault. The meeting was held to meet a deputation from what is called the Irish Society, the object of which is to instruct the Irish people out of the Scriptures in their own native tongue. The Rev. Mr. Foley (one of the deputation) was addressing the assembly at the time the riotous proceedings took place, and it is alleged, in justification of the party who interrupted him, that he was using offensive language towards the Roman Catholic clergy.

The traversers were defended by Counsellor Macklin, assisted by Mr. M. McColgan, Solicitor.
From the evidence, however, of the Rev. James Smith, Rector of Strabane, the Rev. Wm. A. Russell, Presbyterian Minister, Constable Crozier, and others, it appeared that a riot did really take place, as persons were assaulted on the occasion. The Magistrates, after a patient hearing, came to a determination of sending the following persons to trial at the Quarter Sessions, to be holden there next week, viz. Hugh Maguire, Thomas McCarry and Peter Divine.
