WE the under-named Persons, (with many others too numerous to insert here) Freeholders in the Barony of Dungannon and County of Tyrone, deeply touched at the Calamities and Misery into which this and the neighbouring Counties are fallen, by the late riotous and tumultuous Insurrections; think ourselves particularly called upon, in this publick Manner to return our most sincere and grateful Thanks unto Thomas Knox of Dungannon, Esq; as it is with the liveliest Sentiments of Gratitude, we acknowledge that to this Gentleman’s seasonable Interposition and wise Admonitions, it is owing, that many of us did not inadvertently fall into the unhappy and dangerous Errors of our deluded Neighbours; the inner wholesome Impresses, and wise thoughts us, how dreadful how unnaturely the Guilt of having to oppose that Government, from which we receive a fatherly Protection and Support and to which we, in return, owe a filial Duty and Obedience. These Remonstrances, from a Gentleman of Mr. Knox’s Conduct and Character, could not but have great Weight in the Heat and Disorder of the Times, from another, perhaps they had been disregarded, but we had a Confidence in Mr. Knox, who has, ever distinguished himself, as a generous Friend and Protector of the Poor, and an avowed Enemy to Severity and Oppression of every Kind. In short, our present happy Security is owing to his friendly Attention and Care of us, and our Interests; which We will cheerfully embrace every future Occasion of acknowledging, with suitable Returns of Gratitude to him and his worthy Family. Given under our Hands this 17th Day of August, 1761.
