DONEMANAGH PETTY SESSIONS
This Court pf Petty Sessions was held on Thursday last before Mr. Charles Seaton, J.P. (chairman): Mr. Thomas Lyle, J.P., Mr. John Holmes, J.P., and Mr. William Gamble, J.P.
MISCELLANEOUS
Acting-Constable Prior charged Alexander Craig, of Gortmesson, that he, on the 5th January, 1878, did sell, keep for sale, and expose for sale, spirituous liquors, he not being a duly licenced publican. He (Acting-Constable Prior) deposed that they suspected there was drinking going on in the defendant’s premises, and on going there, found about forty persons more or less intoxicated. The defendant said he would plead guilty to the charge, and mentioned that he kept the Orange Lodge of the district. The night was not one of the ordinary meeting nights of the lodge. As there had been a previous conviction against the defendant, he was fined £5, with the usual alternative of imprisonment.
Sarah McLaughlin summoned Alexander Keys, for wilfully and unlawfully assaulting and beating complainant with a stick in her master’s house at Cloghogle on 2nd January. The defendant alleged provocation, which was partly admitted, but the Court held it could not be taken as a justification of so outrageous an assault on a female. The defendant was fined 10s and costs, or fourteen days in gaol
Thomas Ash, Aughternery [Aughtermoy], summoned Thomas McGowan, who had been a Good Templar bandsman, for illegally retaining in his possession a suit of band clothes, valued at £1 5s, which he received from the lodge upon an express contract that he would return them when he ceased to be a member. The case was dismissed without prejudice, as the Court had not the jurisdiction
Thomas McCandless summoned William James Fulton for cutting and carrying away certain timber, his property, from the wood of Ballyneanor, on 31st December last. The case was proved , and the defendant was fined £2 10s, or six weeks in gaol, with hard labour
The Court afterwards hears some small debt cases and three charges of drunkenness.
