The church is situated 11kms south-west of Coleraine. The greater part of the parish was given by James I to the Irish Society and in the eighteenth century the parish was known for its number of bleach greens.
In 1622 the church was reported to be in ruins and was to be restored. In 1661 Roger Taylor was Parish Clerk and Alexander Gold, Churchwarden. In 1686 John Jackson was Parish Clerk and Matthew Stewart, Schoolmaster. The church was built (or repaired) about 1760 and rebuilt in 1797. In 1832. there were 89 Church families numbering 265 persons. In 1861. there were 495 Church people and 4, 235 Protestant Dissenters [Presbyterians].
Pre-1880 Aghadowey Parish Registers had been forwarded to the Public Record Office in Dublin and were destroyed in the firing of the Four Courts and Public Record Office in 1922. The surviving records remain at the church and are: Baptisms, 1882-; marriages, 1845-; burials, 1881-; vestry minutes, 1774-; register of vestrymen, 1870; preachers’ books, 1869 and 1881-.
