Alt Presbyterian Church in the townland of Alt Upper, Urney Parish, Co. Donegal. Photo: Urney Bygone Days Facebook

Urney parish straddles the Tyrone and Donegal county boundary. Alt Church is located a couple of kilometres across the boundary in Co. Donegal and was attended by many Presbyterian families from those townlands within Co. Tyrone. The congregation began as an offshoot of the Secession Church at Drumlegagh [Co. Tyrone]. The first minister was Mr. Samuel Stewart, a member of Drumlegagh congregation who was ordained at Alt in 1834; the meeting house was erected in 1835.

Surviving early records have been microfilmed by the staff of PRONI, Belfast, where they are available for consultation:

Marriages, 1845-1955; Stipend and Account Book, 1860-84. PRONI Ref.: MIC1P/249

The condition of the original records, a degree of difficulty in discerning the handwriting and at times, poor quality of filming make transcription challenging and wherever possible the Urney (1827) & Donaghmore (Co. Donegal) (1815 & 1826) Tithe Applotment Books and Griffiths Valuation (1858), General Alphabetical Index to the Townlands and Towns, Parishes and Baronies of Ireland (1851) and Heather, Peat and Stone; the Townlands and Parishes of Tyrone - O’Kane and personal announcements inserted in Londonderry and Belfast newspapers have been consulted for confirmation of families and townland addresses.
