First Strabane Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Strabane, Co. Tyrone
Surviving registers for this congregation have been microfilmed by the staff of the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), Belfast: Baptisms 1828-1937; Marriages 1845-1919
PRONI Ref: MIC1P/10
The Register of Baptisms has been transcribed and uploaded on CTI:
Founded c1660, the congregation’s first minister was Rev. Robert Wilson. He and many of his congregation fled to the city of Derry seeking refuge during the Seige in 1689, where he died. Replacing the 1693 meetinghouse located in Orchard Street, the new church opened for public worship in 1872. First and Second Strabane congregations united in 1911 and the united congregation worshipped in the First Church on Main Street. Unfortunately, it was completely destroyed by fire on Christmas Day 1938; only the walls, spire and bell survived. The congregation then worshipped in the former meetinghouse of the Second Congregation. A new church was erected on the Derry Road and opened in 1957.
The condition of the original records, a degree of difficulty in discerning the handwriting, and at times, poor quality of filming make transcription challenging and wherever possible the Leckpatrick, Camus and Clonleigh [Co. Donegal] tithe applotment books and Griffiths Valuation (1858) and personal announcements inserted in Londonderry newspapers have been consulted for confirmation of families and townland addresses.
